Self-Ligating Braces: Why We Use Them

At Reed Orthodontics, we always stay ahead of the technology curve to offer our patients the best treatment options available. Braces technology has come a long way in the last decade, making treatment both faster and more comfortable for patients. In our office, we now use self-ligating braces. The Damon System of self-ligating braces are similar to conventional braces, except there are no elastics or rubber bands on the brackets. The reason? They’re simply not needed! Instead, special clips or brackets are used to help the archwire move your teeth into place. This clip allows greater freedom for tooth movement, which will likely reduce discomfort that is sometimes associated with traditional braces. A simple adjustment is made to the brackets or clips, which saves time and causes less discomfort during routine visits to our office. Because self-ligating brackets are efficient, you can expect less frequent visits to the orthodontist and more comfortable treatment. A study conducted by the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics states this: Self-ligating bracket systems displayed a significantly lower level of frictional resistance, dramatically less chair-time for arch wire removal and insertion. The self-ligating brackets also tend to be smaller than the traditional brackets which makes them more attractive. They are available in self-ligating metal or ceramic braces for those looking to minimize the appearance of braces. Cleaning is even easier with self-ligating braces because you don’t have elastic, rubber or metal ties getting in the way! But you still need to take time to brush and floss like you would with regular braces to maintain your healthy smile and stay on track with your treatment.
